Our Club History
July 1937 marked the month and year that concerned citizens of Wilmington met with A.A. Montgomery and other prominent members of the community to make plans to secure a facility for a Boys Club in Wilmington, NC with Dr. F.W. Avant coordinating the movement as President. In November of the same year the New Hanover Board of Education granted the infant organization the use of Williston’s Domestic Science Building which is currently the Williston Middle School. For the following years until 1940 the club operated on private donations and had difficulty raising funds to meet budget demands. In 1940, the demands of budget became a weight too heavy for the three year old organization and they were forced to close their doors.

The doors were not closed for long, though, three years after the newly founded club closed, a Community Chest was formed and the Club reorganized with funding from the Chest. Mr. Carl Moultrie served as Chairman for the organization. As anticipated, in June 1944, the Community Chest allocated $4,279 for the Club’s operation. From 1944 until 1977 the Club operated without any community partnerships. In 1977, though, the Club united with the Salvation Army and combined their efforts to raise more than a million dollars for the construction of 2 new facilities.

Mr. Samuel Howie served as Chairman of the “Combined Capital Campaign” of the two organizations. Mr. Dan Cameron raised the half million dollars to build the Club as well as the Salvation Army building. The funds raised from the efforts afforded the Club to purchase their new facility and in September of 1979 the new building was dedicated for community use. Mr. Adolph Richard was the executive director for the Club when it moved to its new location.

The Club continued to function and operate serving a number of influential young men and gentlemen; until June 1994 when the organization changed its corporate name to the Community Boys & Girls Club of Wilmington, NC, Incorporated in order to reflect its changing demographics. Operating under the newly adopted name of the Community Boys & Girls Club of Wilmington, NC, Incorporated, the Club now serves over 1100 youth annually with core programming standards that influence every part of a child’s life and provides them with a positive place to grow into responsible, civic-minded citizens.
At its location at 901 Nixon Street, the Club operates solely to assist today’s youth to become tomorrow’s successful and civic minded adults. Current Club
