July 1937 |
Community residents met with A.A. Montgomery to form a
Boys Club of America Facility to serve Black youth
Dr. F.W. Avant elected President |

November 1937 |
New Hanover County Board of Education granted use of
Williston's Domestic Science building for the Club's first
location. |

|
|
1937 - 1940 |
Mr. H. Carl Moultrie became the Club's first Executive
Director. Mr. Moore and Mr. Archie Blue assisted in
core program services. |

|
|
November 6, 1940 |
Club ceased to operate. |
| |
|
|
1943 - 1947 |
Club resumes operation in the old Gregory School
Building on Nun Street.
During this time period, Mr. Walter E. Bess became the
Club's second Executive Director. Mr. Bess' legendary
leadership spanned over three decades. |

1947 |
Club relocated to the former U.S.O. facility at 901
Nixon Street Mr. B.T. Washington directed the building fund
campaign. |

1949 |
Mr. Earl Jackson ("Papa Jack") started his 49 year
career with the Community Boys and Girls Club helping young
men and women become outstanding citizens within the
community. |

|
June 1977 |
Salvation Army and Community Boys' Club combined efforts
to raise more than a million dollars for two new facilities.
Dan Cameron served as Chairman of Combined Capital Drive and
Dr. D.C. Roane served as head of Special Community Drive. |

September 1979 |
New Community Boys' Club facility was dedicated |

|
August 1987 |
50th Anniversary celebrated with week of activities. |

|
|
1991 |
Mr. Joseph McGuire retired after nearly 40 years as game
room director. |
| |
|
|
June 1994 |
Organization changed corporate name to Community Boys
and Girls Club of Wilmington, NC, Inc. in order to reflect
its service to all youth. |
